Bed Linen
Australia

Most bed linen sold in Australia is sized for US or UK beds, made from short-staple cotton, and built to be replaced. Ours is not. Flaxfield Linen is designed specifically for Australian mattresses, made from 100% long-staple cotton, and constructed to last a decade or more. The choice of boutique hotels and interior designers who cannot afford to compromise.

Material

Not Short-Staple. Not Blended.

Most bedding uses short-staple cotton or polyester blends. Ours is 100% long-staple cotton — a finer fibre that gets softer with every wash instead of pilling and thinning.

Sizing

Cut for Australia. Not Adapted.

Most bed linen in Australia is sized for US or UK beds and adjusted — or not at all. Ours is proportioned from the ground up for Australian Queen, King and Super King mattresses.

Longevity

10–15 Years. Not 2–3.

Cheap bedding is designed to be replaced. Ours is designed not to be. Long-staple cotton, single-ply construction and full-perimeter elastic fitted sheets that hold their shape over years of use.

Hotels & Interior Designers

When boutique hotels and interior designers specify bed linen — including Kokomo Private Island, Fiji — they cannot afford product that underperforms. Neither can you.

Luxury bed linen designed for Australian homes. Not adapted from somewhere else.

Most bed linen sold in Australia is made for overseas markets and adjusted to fit locally. The proportions are often off, the fitted sheets too shallow for modern mattresses, and the cotton selected for cost rather than longevity.

Flaxfield Linen was founded in Sydney in 2006 with a different approach. Every quilt cover set, sheet set and pillowcase is proportioned specifically for Australian beds, made from 100% long-staple cotton, and constructed to hold its shape and finish over time.

Our fitted sheets are cut with generous depth and full-perimeter elastic so they stay anchored on pillow-top and extra-deep mattresses. Quilted and decorative pieces are designed to layer cohesively and our white bed linen is built to maintain its clarity and structure, wash after wash.

Long-staple cotton fibre — the material behind Flaxfield Linen bed linen

Why the material matters

What Most Bedding
Doesn't Tell You

Most bedding is made from short-staple cotton — cheaper to produce, faster to spin, and noticeably shorter-lived. The fibres are rougher, the yarn weaker, and within a few years of washing the fabric pills, thins and loses its structure. Some manufacturers inflate thread counts using multi-ply or twisted yarns to disguise this. Long-staple cotton is fundamentally different. The fibres are longer, finer and stronger. The yarn they produce is smoother and more durable. Our 400TC single-ply sateen softens with every wash rather than degrading — retaining its hand, its drape and its finish over a decade or more of use.

The questions worth asking before you buy anything

Most bedding marketing is designed to obscure rather than explain. These answers are not.

Size & fit guide

Why do most sheets feel worse after a few washes?

Because most sheets are made from short-staple cotton — shorter fibres that produce a rougher, weaker yarn. The fabric feels acceptable initially but begins to pill, thin and lose structure quickly. Long-staple cotton fibres are longer and finer, producing a stronger yarn with a smoother surface that doesn't break down the same way. Our collections are made from 100% long-staple cotton specifically because it improves with washing rather than degrading. The softness you feel after five years of use should be better than day one — not worse. See our guide to long-staple cotton for the full comparison.

Why doesn't standard bed linen fit Australian beds properly?

Most bed linen sold in Australia — including major department store brands — is designed for US or UK mattress dimensions and either sold as-is or adjusted marginally. Australian Queen, King and Super King beds are not the same size as their international equivalents. The result is quilt covers that don't drape correctly, flat sheets that don't tuck, and fitted sheets that pop off overnight. Every Flaxfield Linen piece is sized from the ground up for Australian standard mattress dimensions — with fitted sheets cut generously enough to stay anchored on pillow-top and extra-deep mattresses.

Thread count is everywhere — what does it actually mean?

Thread count has been heavily gamed by the industry. Numbers above 500TC are almost always achieved by twisting multiple thinner yarns together and counting each strand — the resulting fabric is heavier, less breathable and often lower quality than a genuine 400TC single-ply. Our collections use 400TC single-ply long-staple cotton: one thread per count, woven cleanly in a 4/1 sateen. It is a genuinely high thread count, not an inflated one. The full explanation is here if you want it.

How long should bed linen actually last?

Cheap bed linen is typically replaced every two to three years. At that rate, the low upfront cost compounds into a much higher cost over time — and a lot of textile waste. Well-made long-staple cotton bed linen, washed at 30–40°C on a gentle cycle, should remain in excellent condition for 10–15 years. We have customers still using Flaxfield Linen sets they bought over a decade ago. That is not an accident — it is the direct result of using the right fibre, the right construction, and designing for permanence rather than perceived value at the point of sale.

What is the difference between a quilt cover set and a sheet set?

A quilt cover set includes a quilt cover and matching pillowcases — it encases your quilt insert and sits as the top visible layer. A sheet set includes a flat sheet, fitted sheet and pillowcases — these sit between you and your quilt. Used together they create the layered, hotel-style finish where the flat sheet folds back over the quilt cover. Used alone, sheet sets work well in warmer months or on children's beds. Both are available across Queen, King and Super King in all Flaxfield colourways.
