The bedding layers

Anatomy of a layered bed

A well-made bed is built in layers, and each one has a purpose. Sheets help regulate temperature against the skin. A comforter or quilt (doona) provides warmth. The bedspread is the finishing layer, adding texture and creating a beautifully made bed. A knitted blanket or alpaca throw folded at the foot brings extra warmth in winter and texture throughout the year. European pillowcases sit behind your sleeping pillows to add height, comfort and a balanced finish.

Know the difference

Comforter

A quilted, lightly filled layer designed to be used in place of—or over—a quilt. Softer, loftier and warmer than a bedspread, it sits neatly within the frame of the bed.

Bedspread

A lightweight quilted layer with a generous drape that creates a beautifully finished bed. Perfect for adding texture and an extra layer throughout the seasons.

Coverlet

Another name for a bedspread. “Coverlet” is commonly used in the US, while “bedspread” is the term most familiar in Australia.

Quilt Cover

A removable cover for your quilt or doona. Browse our quilt cover collection to complete your bedding.

Common questions

Comforters, bedspreads and layering, your questions answered

The terminology, the sizing and how the layers work together on an Australian bed.

What is the difference between a comforter and a bedspread?

A comforter is a quilted, lightly filled layer that adds warmth and softness. It sits within the frame of the bed and is perfect for layering.

A bedspread is a lighter quilted layer with a generous drop that covers the sides of the bed, creating a beautifully finished look. Many of our customers use both — the comforter for warmth and the bedspread as the top layer for an effortlessly styled bed.

Do I need a bedspread if I already have a quilt cover?

They each have a different purpose. A quilt cover protects your quilt or doona, while a bedspread sits over the top to add texture and keep the bed looking beautifully made throughout the day.

In warmer months, many people put the quilt away and sleep under the bedspread with a flat sheet for a lighter layer.

Are these pieces sized for Australian beds?

Yes. Our bedding is designed for Australian mattress sizes and proportions.

Our bedspreads are generously sized to provide the right amount of drape on Australian Queen and King beds. Many imported bedspreads are made to US or UK sizing, which can leave them looking short on Australian mattresses.

For detailed measurements, refer to our Size & Fit Guide.

How do I layer a bed for summer and winter?

In summer, a flat sheet and bedspread create a light, breathable layer while still giving your bed a beautifully finished look.

As the seasons change, simply add a comforter or quilt beneath the bedspread. During winter, layer with a knitted throw or alpaca blanket folded across the foot of the bed for extra warmth and texture.

The beauty of layering is that your bed always looks considered, no matter the season.

What are European pillowcases for?

European pillowcases are 65 × 65 cm square pillows that sit behind your sleeping pillows.

They add height, softness and balance to the bed, while also providing comfortable support when reading in bed. Two European pillows suit most Queen beds, while three create a fuller look on a King.

Is a coverlet the same as a bedspread?

In most cases, yes.

“Coverlet” is the term more commonly used in the United States, while “bedspread” is the name most Australians are familiar with. Both describe a lightweight quilted top layer that adds texture and provides a finished look.

Our Resort and Orcia bedspreads are the style many international brands would refer to as coverlets.

How do I care for quilted and knitted pieces?

Quilted cotton comforters and bedspreads can be machine washed on a cool, gentle cycle and line dried in the shade — high tumble-dry heat can stress the quilting over time.

Knitted blankets such as the Sala are best washed gently and dried flat to keep their shape and softness. Alpaca throws have their own care needs, covered in our alpaca throws collection.
