Manhattan Nickel Flat Sheet Set
A flat sheet with two matching cuffed pillowcases in white 400 thread count long-staple cotton sateen, with a soft silver grey header carrying two lines of satin stitch. Presented in a gift box.
Description
A flat sheet set does one visible thing: it puts a line across the head of the bed when the sheet is turned down. In Nickel that line is a soft silver grey with two rows of satin stitch, matched on the cuff of each pillowcase.
Grey behaves as structure rather than as a second colour, which makes this the easier of the two colourways to layer. It sits under the Manhattan quilt cover as the full set, and under a plain or quilted white cover without competing with it.
About the embroidery
The embroidery is worked in colourfast viscose rayon satin stitch.
On flat sheets and cuffed pillowcases the embroidered panel is cut, embroidered and folded before it is sewn to the piece, so the border is placed against a known edge rather than stitched into a finished sheet. On tailored pillowcases the border is worked into the face and framed by the flange stitching.
Iron the embroidery on the reverse at a medium temperature. Avoid optical brighteners and fabric softeners.

The header
The header is the band that shows when the sheet is turned down over the quilt, and on a made bed it is the only part of a flat sheet anyone actually sees. In Nickel it is a soft silver grey with two parallel lines of satin stitch worked inside it, which gives the head of the bed a defined horizontal line without putting a strong colour there.
The pillowcases
Cuffed rather than bordered: the grey band and its satin stitch sit on a cuff at the opening end, so the detail lines up with the header of the sheet rather than framing the whole pillowcase. Behind the cuff is an envelope closure, which holds the pillow without buttons or a zip and leaves the front face uninterrupted.
A tonal grey has to be read through the light rather than through contrast. The lustre of the satin stitch is what keeps the line visible.
