Description

Navy introduces contrast beneath lighter layers, creating a defined line when the sheet is folded back. The depth of the tone allows the top edge of the bed to read more clearly without overwhelming the composition.

Used in this way, it acts as a controlled accent, adding structure through placement rather than scale.

The weave

Sateen uses a 4/1 construction — four warp threads float over one weft — creating a smooth, light-catching surface. At 400TC with single-ply long-staple cotton the sheet is lightweight and breathable, not heavy. Unlike multi-ply thread count sheets, the fabric breathes freely and softens progressively with each wash rather than roughening over time.

The embroidery

The satin-stitch is embroidered in rayon thread, chosen for its brightness and clean, consistent finish. It forms two parallel lines along the flat sheet header and pillowcase cuffs, sitting smoothly on the fabric with minimal interruption to the weave. The navy thread is selected for its ability to retain colour through repeated washing, maintaining its depth without fading or transferring colour.

Navy behaves differently on sateen. The surface draws out the depth of the stitch against the white, creating contrast that feels deliberate rather than decorative.

Wash cold or warm

30–40°C on a gentle cycle. Use liquid detergent only. Powder detergents and fabric softeners coat the cotton fibres and gradually dull the sateen surface and reduce its natural breathability over time.

Tumble dry medium

Remove while still slightly damp. Sateen smooths naturally as it cools, reducing the need for ironing. Avoid over-drying, as heat-set creases are harder to remove than those from line drying.

Improves with washing

Long-staple cotton settles into the weave with each wash, becoming progressively smoother over time unlike short-staple cotton, which tends to pill under the same conditions.

Are these sheets sized for Australian beds?

Yes. Australian mattress dimensions differ from UK and US standards. An Australian Queen flat sheet is cut to 255 × 275 cm, compared to a US Queen at 228 × 259 cm. All Classique flat sheets are patterned to Australian proportions with full drape allowance on all sides for a properly made bed. For exact dimensions see our Australian bed linen size guide.

What is "single pick insertion" and why does it matter?

Single pick insertion means one weft thread is inserted per weaving pass, rather than multiple threads bundled together. It produces a finer, more even weave surface. At 400TC with single pick, you get a genuinely lightweight, breathable sheet not a heavy fabric with an inflated thread count created by bundling multiple thin yarns and counting each ply separately.

Is 400 thread count high enough for luxury bedding?

Yes 400TC in single-ply long-staple cotton is the optimal specification for luxury cotton sateen. Thread counts above 400TC are typically achieved using multi-ply yarns, which inflate the number while reducing breathability and increasing fabric weight. A genuine 400TC single-ply long-staple sheet outperforms a 1000TC multi-ply sheet in feel, drape, and durability. Learn more in our thread count guide.

What is the difference between sateen and percale cotton sheets?

Percale uses a 1/1 plain weave, one thread over, one thread under producing a matte, crisp finish that feels cool and lightweight. Sateen uses a 4/1 weave, four threads over, one under producing a smoother, slightly lustrous surface with a softer hand feel. Sateen is warmer and more formal; percale is cooler and more casual. Both are 100% cotton; the weave determines the character.

Will the navy satin-stitch fade or change colour over time?

The navy embroidery thread is selected for colour stability, maintaining its depth through repeated washing without shifting tone. Lower-quality navy threads can take on green or purple undertones over time, this is specifically avoided through thread selection.
