Resort Sheet Set - Black European Border
The same European flat sheet in 400 thread count long-staple cotton sateen, with the 100mm mitred turnback worked in black against the white cloth. Two cuffed pillowcases complete the set. The contrast border is the whole point: one drawn line at the head of the bed, and nothing else.
Description
The same European turnback, worked in black. On an otherwise white bed it becomes the only line in the room, which is the intention: one piece of definition at the head of the bed and nothing else asking for attention.
It suits a plain setting better than a busy one. Against white walls and white bedding the border reads as architecture. Layered with pattern, it loses that clarity.

Fabric & construction
The contrast turnback
A European turnback is a border built into the top of the flat sheet, so the fold at the head of the bed is a deliberate finished edge rather than whatever the sheet happens to do when you turn it down. In black against white it stops being a construction detail and becomes the only decoration on the bed. Ours is 100mm and mitred: the border is folded and pressed first, the mitres are cut after folding and sewn, then the corners are turned out and pressed sharp. A contrast border is less forgiving than a plain one, because every millimetre of an uneven mitre shows.
The pillowcases
Cuffed rather than bordered: a 100mm cuff is built onto the pillowcase front in a three stage operation and top stitched close to the cuff edge, so the cuff reads as a band at the opening rather than a frame around the whole face. Behind it sits a 30mm envelope hem, which holds the pillow in without buttons or a zip. The side seams are finished with a four thread overedge on a 5mm bite and tied off at the ends.
A contrast border is less forgiving than a plain one. Every millimetre of an uneven mitre shows, which is why the mitres are cut after the border is folded rather than before.
