Resort Quilted Bedspread - Slate
A reversible quilted bedspread in slate long-staple cotton percale, the same cloth on both faces with cotton wadding between them. Cotton throughout, rather than a cotton face over a synthetic fill. The geometric pattern and its wide border are quilted as a single piece rather than assembled separately, then bound in a bias edge stitched through every layer. Slate is the darkest of the Resort colourways, and the one that reads as a deliberate choice rather than a neutral.
Description
A quilted layer light enough to use on its own through summer and substantial enough to sit over a quilt in winter. It is reversible, so it can be turned without changing the look of the bed.
Slate is a cool grey rather than a blue. Against white bedding it reads as a defined block at the foot of the bed, which is a different job from the warmer neutrals: it is there to be seen.
Sizing
Super Queen 240 x 260 cm. Super King 260 x 280 cm. Double 180 x 220 cm where available.
Bedspread sizes are generous by design, so the quilt drapes over the sides of the bed rather than sitting on top of it. Finished dimensions do not include an allowance for fabric shrinkage.

Fabric & construction
The quilting
The pattern and the wide border are quilted as one piece. That matters more than it sounds: an applied border is quicker to make but drifts out of register with the pattern it frames, and the join is the first place a quilt gives way. Quilting both together keeps the border square to the pattern and removes the seam entirely. The edge is then finished with a 12mm bias binding, top stitched through all the quilt layers rather than only the top face.
The cloth
Percale rather than sateen. Percale is a one over one weave with a matt finish and a cool, crisp hand; sateen carries more threads on the surface, which reads smoother and slightly warmer. For a bedspread that has to work through an Australian summer, percale is the better choice. The matt surface also suits a deeper colour, holding the tone flat rather than throwing back the light.

Care
Machine wash
Machine wash with a mild liquid detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, which coat cotton fibres and flatten the crispness percale is chosen for.
Tumble low, or line dry in shade
Tumble dry on low heat, or line dry out of direct sunlight. Deeper colours lose depth faster in full sun than pale ones.
Warm iron if you want it crisper
A warm iron restores the flat, matt finish. The bedspread is perfectly good without it.
