Australian Bedding Sizes
Australian
bedding sizes.
Australian mattress dimensions differ from US, UK and Asian sizing. This guide explains exact measurements, how quilt covers are proportioned and how to choose the correct fitted sheet depth for a tailored, hotel-style finish. For Flaxfield Linen's specific product dimensions see our Bed Linen Size & Fit Guide.
These measurements refer to the mattress itself — not the quilt insert, quilt cover or sheets placed on top. Bedding is intentionally made larger to allow for natural drape and overhang.

The quilt covers the insert,
not the mattress.
A common misunderstanding is that a Queen quilt cover should match the dimensions of a Queen mattress. It does not.
The quilt cover is sized to fit the quilt insert. The insert is larger than the mattress and that difference is what creates the drop on each side of the bed.
Well-proportioned bedding should fall evenly, framing the mattress rather than exposing it. In considered interiors and boutique hotel settings, this balance of width and drop is what creates a refined, structured appearance.
Three measurements.
Depth matters most.
Width and length correspond directly to mattress size. Depth is where most fitting issues occur. Modern mattresses commonly range from 35 cm up to 50 cm deep — a sheet designed for a shallow mattress will not anchor correctly on a deeper one.
If you are unsure of your mattress depth, measure from the base to the highest point including any pillow-top layers. Our deep-sided fitted sheets accommodate depths up to 43 cm.

| Single | 92 × 188 | 140 × 210 | ~24 cm |

Standard Australian pillow dimensions differ from US and UK sizing. Selecting the correct pillowcase size ensures a tailored fit without excess fabric or a strained seam.
| Pillow type | Pillow (cm) | Pillowcase (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 48 × 73 | 50 × 75 |
| King | 48 × 90 | 50 × 90 |
| European | 65 × 65 | 65 × 65 |
Tailored and bordered pillowcases include an additional 7.5 cm decorative flange beyond these dimensions. European pillowcases are used as decorative front pillows and are typically not slept on.

Different dimensions.
Australian and New Zealand mattress sizes share the same size names but differ in width on several key sizes — particularly King. Purchasing across markets without checking dimensions can result in bedding that doesn't fit correctly. For guidance on fabric quality and thread count, see our Thread Count Guide.
The New Zealand size closest to an Australian King (183 × 203 cm) is the New Zealand Super King (183 × 203 cm). Always confirm the actual dimensions before ordering.

Australian King bedding will not fit a US King mattress correctly. The US King is approximately 10 cm wider. International bedding purchased for Australian mattresses should always be verified against actual mattress dimensions before ordering.
Sizing explained.
Australian, New Zealand and US sizing all differ. These are the questions we're asked most often.
In Australia, a King mattress measures 183 × 203 cm, while a Super King measures 203 × 203 cm. The primary difference is width — the Super King provides an additional 20 cm across, creating a more expansive sleeping surface and stronger visual proportion in larger bedrooms.
Australian and New Zealand mattress sizes use similar naming, but some dimensions differ. A New Zealand King measures approximately 165 × 203 cm, while an Australian King measures 183 × 203 cm. The New Zealand size closest to an Australian King is a New Zealand Super King (approximately 183 × 203 cm). We recommend confirming exact measurements before purchasing across markets.
Australian and US mattress sizes are not interchangeable. A US King differs from an Australian King in both width and proportion. Terminology also varies — a "comforter" is commonly used in the US instead of "doona" and "duvet cover" is used instead of "quilt cover".
A balanced quilt drop is typically between 25–35 cm on each side of the bed. Thicker mattresses or higher bed bases may require a slightly larger insert to maintain proportion and achieve a tailored finish.
For an Australian Queen mattress (153 × 203 cm), the recommended quilt insert size is 210 × 210 cm. This creates approximately 28 cm of drop on each side of the bed for a balanced, hotel-style finish.
No. An Australian King mattress measures 183 × 203 cm, while a US King measures approximately 193 × 203 cm. The US King is around 10 cm wider. Australian King bedding will not fit a US King mattress correctly.
