Description
Manhattan takes its cue from New York's Art Deco architecture, which means it is built from straight lines and a defined frame rather than from pattern. A navy border squares off around a white cotton sateen ground, with two lines of satin stitch set inside it.
It is a bed that holds focus. The navy behaves less like a colour than like a drawn line, so it works against warm timber and off-whites as readily as it does in a blue room, and it needs little else on the bed to look finished.

Fabric & construction
The framed border
The border is mitred, so the corners are joined at 45 degrees and the frame turns cleanly rather than one side overlapping the other. That matters more here than on a plain cover. A contrast border shows every millimetre of an uneven corner, and the whole design rests on the frame reading as four straight lines meeting square. Finished at 35mm and carried around the cover, it makes the bed read as a framed panel once it is dressed.
The satin stitch
Two parallel lines of satin stitch run inside the border, worked in colourfast viscose rayon so they hold their depth against the navy. The pillowcases carry the same stitch on all four sides rather than only at the opening, which is what makes the pillows read as part of the frame instead of separate pieces sitting in front of it. The cover closes with concealed buttons, so nothing interrupts the front.
The design is four straight lines meeting square. There is nowhere for an uneven corner to hide.

Care
Machine wash 30 to 40C
Wash with a liquid detergent. Avoid optical brighteners and fabric softeners.
Tumble medium or line dry
Tumble dry on medium and remove slightly damp, or line dry in the shade.
Iron on the reverse
Iron the satin stitch on the reverse at a medium temperature.
Do not bleach
Bleach and optical brighteners are not suitable for the sateen or the embroidery thread.
