Title
Description

Hampton is built the same way as Orcia and Siena, and differs in its quilting pattern: an all-over diamond, worked in a lustrous viscose rayon thread with a corded piping run into the border. It gives a plain white bed a great deal of surface detail without introducing colour or pattern.

The mitred border runs down both sides and adds 16cm to the finished width, which is what gives it a proper drop over a deeper mattress. Used with a quilt inside it works through winter; with the quilt removed it becomes a lighter layer on its own.

What's included

Each quilt cover set includes one quilted quilt cover and a matching pair of quilted pillowcases with concealed button placket closures.

European and bordered pillowcases are sold separately and share the same quilting and piped finish.

The border and the piping

The border is 80mm and mitred at 45 degrees, with a fabric-covered corded piping run into its edge over a 1.5mm soft cord. The piping is made before the border is: covered through a folder with a piping tube, stitched to the border edge, then folded over to form the piped edge. A Queen takes 8.45 metres of it and a King 9.15 metres. Running down both sides, the border adds 16cm to the finished width of the cover, and that width is what gives it a proper drop over a deeper mattress.

The quilting and the closure

The diamond is the quilting pattern, worked across the whole face in a lustrous 100% viscose rayon thread on a fine needle, which is what gives the stitch depth rather than leaving it as a flat line. The standard it is made to requires no bobbin thread visible from the top side, no bruising or pressure marks from clamping, and any repair made from the back rather than the face. The back of the cover is plain. The closure is concealed buttons on a placket, 18mm, colour matched and non-corrosive, spaced at 200mm so the opening pulls evenly across its width.

A Queen carries eight and a half metres of covered corded piping. Every metre of it is made and inserted before the border ever reaches the cover.

Machine wash 30 to 40C

Wash with a mild liquid detergent and rinse well. Avoid fabric softeners, which coat cotton fibres and flatten the quilted surface over time.

Line dry or tumble medium

Line dry out of direct sunlight, or tumble on a medium setting.

Iron on the reverse

Iron the embroidery on the reverse at a medium temperature.

Do not bleach

Bleach and optical brighteners are not suitable for the sateen face, the embroidery thread or the piping cord.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the diamond quilting raised or flat against the cloth?
The quilting is slightly raised. The diamond is stitched through a lightweight padding beneath the cotton sateen, giving the surface depth rather than leaving the pattern flat against the cloth. It becomes more apparent as light moves across the bed.
Why is viscose rayon used for the quilting?
Viscose rayon has a natural lustre that gives the stitch a slight sheen against the white cotton sateen. With no contrasting colour to define the pattern, this is what allows the diamond to remain visible while keeping the cover entirely white.
How noticeable is the diamond pattern on an all white bed?
From a distance Hampton reads as a white quilt cover. Closer up, the raised diamond and slight sheen of the quilting become more apparent. It adds surface detail without introducing another colour to the bed.
Will Hampton work with patterned or embroidered sheets?
Yes, although the diamond quilting already gives the cover a strong surface texture. We tend to pair Hampton with plain sheets or restrained embroidery so the different details do not compete with one another.
