Description

White works as a base layer beneath the bed, maintaining continuity without drawing attention to itself. It allows the upper layers to sit cleanly above it, supporting the overall composition without interruption.

Turned back at the top, it introduces a subtle break that defines the edge of the bed while remaining consistent with the overall palette.

The weave

Sateen uses a 4/1 construction — four warp threads float over one weft — creating a smooth, light-catching surface. At 400TC with single-ply long-staple cotton the sheet is lightweight and breathable, not heavy. Unlike multi-ply thread count sheets, the fabric breathes freely and softens progressively with each wash rather than roughening over time.

The embroidery

Two parallel satin-stitch lines run along the flat sheet header and pillowcase cuffs. On the white, the thread is tonal, reading as structure rather than decoration. Drawn from formal European linen tradition, the stitch is engineered to sit flat after washing without puckering, maintaining precise alignment on the made bed.

"The tonal satin-stitch brings a sense of considered design without overt detail. A natural choice for hotel beds that must photograph cleanly and withstand repeated laundering."

Wash cold or warm

30–40°C on a gentle cycle. Use liquid detergent only. Powder detergents and fabric softeners coat the cotton fibres and gradually dull the sateen surface and reduce its natural breathability over time.

Tumble dry medium

Remove while still slightly damp. Sateen smooths naturally as it cools, reducing the need for ironing. Avoid over-drying, as heat-set creases are harder to remove than those from line drying.

Improves with washing

Long-staple cotton settles into the weave with each wash, becoming progressively smoother over time unlike short-staple cotton, which tends to pill under the same conditions.

Is the white embroidery visible against the white sheet?

Yes, but subtly. Rather than relying on colour contrast, the white satin stitch catches the light differently from the cotton sateen beneath it. The embroidered lines become more or less visible as the light across the bed changes.

Why choose embroidered white rather than a plain white sheet?

The bed still reads as entirely white, but not as entirely plain. The satin stitch gives the header a defined line and a change of surface, which adds detail without introducing a second colour to the room.

Does white on white stay looking clean over time?

The thread and the cloth are washed together and neither is dyed, so the embroidery stays as white as the sheet around it. Wash at 30 to 40 degrees with a mild liquid detergent and dry out of direct sunlight. Avoid bleach and optical brighteners, which can affect the appearance and finish of the cotton and embroidery over time.
