Lyon Cotton Comforter

100% cotton sateen
Diamond quilted
Medium-light loft
240 x 260cm

The Lyon is the layer that finishes a bed. A printed cotton ticking stripe, quilted through an oversized central diamond and framed by a line-quilted border. The loft is medium-light, so it adds weight and structure across the bed without the heaviness of a doona. At 240 x 260 cm it covers both queen and king.

Description

A comforter is a lighter thing than a quilt: enough weight to sleep under on its own through the warmer months, and a layer you can leave folded at the end of the bed the rest of the year without the bed looking heavy.

Lyon is plain, which is the point. It gives the bed texture through the quilting rather than through pattern, so it sits under a decorative pillowcase or a throw without competing with either.

Layering

A comforter is a top-of-bed layer rather than a replacement for a quilt. Lay it flat over a made bed for a crisp finish, or fold it across the foot to add height and texture. Sized to cover both queen and king beds.

The comforter

The Lyon is built up in plies rather than simply filled. A lightweight cotton interlining sits behind the printed outer face, and the diamond pattern and border are quilted through every layer on a single needle quilting frame. That is what keeps the fill evenly distributed and stops it migrating into the corners over time, which is the usual failure of a lightly filled top-of-bed layer. The border is line quilted so the edges hold their structure and the comforter drapes cleanly rather than spilling over them.

The ticking stripe

Ticking began as a utility cloth, woven tightly for mattress and pillow covers where the close stripe stopped feathers working their way through the weave. The Lyon keeps the reference without the coarseness. The stripe is printed on cotton sateen, black on white, at a scale that reads as pattern from across the room and as texture up close. It sits easily against plain white bedding, which is usually where it ends up.

Dry and store out of direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure will lift the black of the ticking stripe long before it affects anything else.

Machine wash warm

Wash in warm water at 40C and rinse well. Use liquid detergent. Powder detergents and fabric softeners coat cotton fibres and dull the printed face over time.

Line dry in shade, or tumble on low

Dry out of direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can shift the colour of the ticking stripe. If tumble drying, use a low setting and remove while slightly damp.

Do not bleach or dry clean

Neither suits the printed cotton face or the polyester fill. Avoid optical brighteners for the same reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

How warm is the Lyon Comforter?
The Lyon has a medium-light loft and provides gentle warmth while remaining breathable. It adds comfort and weight without feeling heavy, which makes it comfortable to lie under and suitable for layering year round.
What is the difference between a comforter and a bedspread?
A comforter has more loft and sits higher on top of the bed, with light padding that adds warmth, weight and structure. It creates a fuller, more layered look while remaining breathable and easy to style. A bedspread sits flatter and is typically unpadded or very lightly padded, designed primarily for coverage and visual finish rather than warmth.
Will one size fit both a queen and a king bed?
Yes. At 240 x 260 cm the Lyon covers both. It can be laid flat for a crisp, architectural look, or folded at the foot of the bed to introduce height, texture and a finished layered effect.
Can the Lyon Comforter be washed at home?
Yes. Machine wash in warm water at 40C and rinse well, then line dry in the shade or tumble dry on low. Do not bleach and do not dry clean. Given the finished size, a large capacity machine is easier on both the comforter and the machine.
